Bobcat cheerleaders shine at nationals

ELLISVILLE – Practice, hard work and dedication have once again paid off for the Jones County Junior College Bobcat cheerleading squads.
The co-ed squad finished third and the all-girl squad was eighth in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) national competition Jan. 16-18 at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The all-girl squad was third in the semifinal round.
“I am proud of both squads,” said JCJC cheerleader sponsor Angela Clayton. “The co-ed squad did well and the all-girl squad did an excellent job. They had a great performance. Both squads are still ranked as the top cheerleading squads in the state.”
Clayton said the Bobcats spend a great deal of time preparing for the UCA event.
“We actually start in September when school is under way,” she said. “We work on several things at that point and then near the end of October, we have a choreographer come in to help us with our routine.
“We then prepare for nationals by working all through the holiday season. It’s a tough process, but it’s worth it. It’s a fun trip for our cheerleaders and we compete against some very talented teams from across the nation.”
At the same time the cheerleaders are preparing for nationals, they are doing routines and making appearances in the area to promote JCJC.
“We do all kinds of community service types of things,” said Clayton. “We perform at all kinds of events, in addition to being at the football and basketball games.”
Keith and Susie Lehn serve as assistants for Clayton.
The co-ed squad consists of Dustin Batson of Vancleave, Jillian Brady of Laurel, Ryan Colston of Quitman, C.J. Deloach of Clinton, Aaron Gillett of Vancleave, Justin Hebert of Jayess, Neil Jarrett of Picayune, Presley Johnson of Mt. Olive, Jade Jones of Picayune, Jonathan Moore of Hattiesburg, Pebbles Purvis of Seminary, Jillian Schmermund of Long Beach, Chris Smith of Enterprise, Katie Smith of Laurel, Tyler Walley of Laurel and Samantha Zugg of Mobile, Ala.
The all-girl squad is comprised of Britton Baker of Waynesboro, Brooke Boswell of Laurel, Karla Bounds of Sumrall, Kayla Bounds of Sumrall, Lauren Bridges of Sumrall, Kaleigh Byrd of Laurel, Hannah Beth Byrd of Richton, Whitney Clark of Laurel, Kate Davis of Monticello, Brittany Dearman of Seminary, Brittany Harper of Heidelberg, Courtney Lloyd of McComb, Abby Mosley of Laurel, Jessica Robertson of Clinton, Taylor White of Seminary, Erin Wood of Ellisville and Britney Young of Seminary.
Channing Key is the mascot and Adam Dearman is the manager.

Tryouts for the 2009-10 Bobcat cheerleading squads will be coming up later this spring.
