What is an online course?
Online courses, as offered by MSVCC, are fully online with the exception of one to three proctored tests.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of online courses?
Online courses offer students complete flexibility to schedule their classes around work and family. This works well for many students. However some students perform better in a traditional classroom. They prefer the direct interaction between the instructor and students and the ability to sit down with the instructor after class.
Do online courses cost more that traditional classes?
Yes. The tuition and lab fees are the same as other courses, but there is a $15.00 fee per course which is assessed.
What is involved in an online class?
Courses are offered on two similar servers (Blackboard or Desire2Learn). Just before the classes begin each semester, the state-level managers for MSVCC will create an account for you in the appropriate server. You obtain your user ID from a student profile web page. After classes begin, you will log into your account to access course materials, assignments, and teacher instructions. You need to login in frequently and complete assignments on time. When your instructor assigns a proctored test, make an appointment to take the test.
Proctored tests? What's that?
Proctored testing requires you to go to an approved testing site, present positive ID, and take a test under the supervision of a test proctor. You do not meet as a class, but will make an appointment with the site.
What equipment do I need?
If you are able to connect to the Internet and browse most web sites without difficulty, you should be able to use the Blackboard site. It is suggested that you have a word processor capable of opening Word documents and Adobe Reader. Your instructor may require additional software. This should be noted in the online syllabus.
I use AOL, will I have a problem connecting to the Blackboard site?
If you use the browser provided by AOL, yes. Blackboard is not compatible with customized AOL Internet Explorer browser. However there is a known "work-around." Download a standard version of Internet Explorer from Microsoft or the FireFox browser and install it. Connect to AOL as you normally do. Once connected, minimize the AOL browser and start the second browser. You should be able to navigate the Blackboard site without problem.
Do I need a textbook? If so, how do I get it? What does it cost?
Yes, you will need a textbook and, for some courses, supplemental materials. You can contact the Bookstore, as they have the information on what is needed for each course. You have the right to purchase your books elsewhere. However, please be aware that you could accidentally get the wrong edition. Also some textbooks for online classes include an access key to the publisher's web site. These keys would not normally come with materials purchased from online vendors.
Can I get financial aid while taking online classes?
Yes, online classes are the same as other classes except how they are delivered. The credit hours count toward your full-time or part-time status. Check with the Financial Aid Office.
Can I register online?
No, not at this time. You register for online courses just as you do for traditional classes.
How many online courses can I take at one time?
Jones does not have a specific policy regarding how many online classes you may take at one time. It does have a student load policy outlined in the catalog. How much is too much is a question only you can answer. You must realize that most online classes require as much or more time than traditional classes. It requires a particular dedication and self-motivation on your part.
Is there any way to know if online classes are right for me?
This is a very individual question. It directly relates to your easy, uninterrupted access to a computer, your motivation, time available to spend on the course, and the ability to work alone. The deans and your potential instructors will be happy to discuss this with you. You are encouraged to take the Readiness for Education At a Distance Indicator quiz.
What is the withdrawal policy?
The policy for Jones online courses is the same as for traditional course. If you procrastinate and don't keep up with the materials your instructor may suggest that you need to withdraw from the course. Check the Student Handbook for specific withdrawal guidelines.
