LAUREL – The first MACJC Golf Tournament for the 2009 season began Monday under very cool conditions at Laurel Country Club.

In the Division II portion of the tournament, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is on top with a 303, followed by East Mississippi Community College at 315 and Holmes Community College at 316. In the Division III standings, Jones County Junior College is first at 360, followed by Southwest Mississippi Community College at 410.

Individually, Nic Ishee of Gulf Coast was the only golfer to post a score of par, firing a 72. Richie Williams of Gulf Coast is at 73, while Blake Hatfield of Northeast is at 75.

Nick Keyes, a sophomore from West Jones, led JCJC with an 86, while Mitchell Smith of Simpson Academy and Ben Whitehead of Sumrall both shot 90s.

The 36-hole tournament concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. There are 12 teams and 68 players competing in the event.
