ELLISVILLE – Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College took a pair of games from Jones County Junior College here Saturday afternoon at Lady Bobcat Field.

The Lady Bulldogs won the opener, 8-1 and took the nightcap, 5-4, despite a four-RBI game from JCJC catcher Brittney Arnold.

JCJC falls to 6-18 on the season, 3-11 in the South Division. The Lady Bobcats go to East Central for a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday and travel to Hinds for a 1 p.m. twinbill on Friday.

Gulf Coast improves to 14-6 overall, 11-3 in division play. The Lady Bulldogs host East Central on Wednesday.

Lady Bulldogs 8, Lady Bobcats 1

Lindsey Keyes had a bases-loaded, three-run double in the first inning and Gulf Coast never looked back.

Jones got within 3-1 in the third when Shana Nicholson doubled to left, was sacrificed to third by Monica Shoemake and scored on Katie Alderman’s double to left.

The Lady Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh.

Nicholson and Alderman had doubles for JCJC, while Shana Ladner, Kasey McCann, Kirsten Perry and Candace Leach added singles.

Katie Holifield went the distance and took the loss for Jones.

Holly Lawrence singled three times for Gulf Coast. Tiffany Fuller singled twice, while Keyes doubled. Julie Mercer, Kayla Moran, Megan Colvin, Sarah Smaltz and Whitney Welford added singles.

Brandie Westerfield posted the victory.

Lady Bulldogs 5, Lady Bobcats 4

Gulf Coast scored a run in the first and Jones answered with a run in the second. Elisha Ray led off the inning for the Lady Bobcats with a single to center and was sacrificed to second by Kristen McDonald. Shoemake followed with a single and Arnold’s sacrifice fly to left scored Ray.

The Lady Bulldogs scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ladner singled and Ray reached on a fielder’s choice. McDonald sacrificed the runners and Arnold followed with a two-run double down the left field line.

Gulf Coast added a run in the sixth, but Arnold belted a solo home run to center field with two outs in the bottom of the frame. Devin Darr then reached on an infield single, Alderman reached on an error and Blaire Sumrall walked to load the bases. McCann then hit a hard ground ball, but the third baseman fielded it and stepped on the bag to end the threat.

Ray drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, but Gulf Coast pitcher Brittany Fields got a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Arnold homered and doubled for the Lady Bobcats, while Alderman singled twice. Ray, Shoemake, Ladner, McCann and Darr had singles.

Holifield started and pitched the first two innings for JCJC. Falon Nettles pitched the third and fourth innings and was tagged with the loss. Holifield came back in and tossed the final three innings.

Lawrence had three singles for Gulf Coast, giving her six on the day. Cassie Slaton doubled and singled, while Smaltz, Keyes and Colvin added singles.

Fields went the distance and recorded the victory.
