The tenth annual Jones County Junior College Alumni Foundation Golf Tournament was originally scheduled for March 27, but was postponed because of rain.
But that did not dampen the spirits of the golfers, as a record number of teams and players converged on the beautiful Laurel Country Club course Friday for a full day of food, fun, fellowship and golf.
“We had 132 players, 44 teams, 38 corporate sponsors, five social sponsors and over 60 door prizes donated from our eight-county district,” said JCJC Alumni Coordinator Amie Herrington. “We have had teams play today that had been in it for the past ten years.
“We had a really good turnout. We actually had to turn away some teams.”
Money raised from the tournament goes to fund eight scholarships for the eight-county district through the JCJC Alumni Association. Over $10,000 is raised each year at the golf tournament for scholarships.
The team of Joey Landrum, J.T. Jernigan and David Webb won this year’s event with a 17-under par 55. Allen Hobb, Jimmy Hudson and Brian Clark were second with a 58 and Kevin Harrison, Thomas and Glorioso were third at 59. There was a scorecard playoff to determine the top three finishers in the second flight. All teams posted a 68 and the team of Brett Livingston, Kelle Burgess and Charlie Williams came out on top. Mike Williamson, David Freeman and Kirk Landrum took second and David Morgan, Robert Herring and Steve McKay finished third.
As an added attraction this year, a chance to win a $1 million annuity, courtesy of Susan Barnett and Magnolia Realty, was available for every golfer who participated. At the conclusion of the tournament, David Hagan Sr.’s name was drawn out of a box and he was given the opportunity to make a hole-in-one from 200 yards out on No. 9. Hagan hit the ball straight at the flag, but it came up short and landed in the front bunker.
In addition to golf, ribeye sandwiches, shrimp on a stick, sausage dogs, crawfish pies and other goodies were available on the course. All golfers were treated to pancakes and sausage to start the day.
