TUCSON, Ariz. – The Jones County Junior College No. 2 doubles team – J.J. Benson and Meredith Johnson – won its opening match in the NJCAA Women’s Division I Tennis Tournament here at Randolph Tennis Center on Monday.

Benson, a West Jones sophomore, and Johnson, a Northeast Jones freshman, defeated Kayla Arbuthnot and Katie Mabery of Lewis and Clark College (Ill.), 7-5, 7-6 (5). Benson and Johnson will now face Frederique Suntrum and Francesco Bassoo of Lee College (Texas), at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In No. 1 singles, JCJC’s Erica Walker lost a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Nadia Lee of Lee College in a winner’s bracket matchup.
In other opening round doubles’ matches, Walker and Rachel Whaley lost to Iris Rendon and Anna Zurek of Tyler College (Texas), 6-2, 6-2 in No.1 doubles. They will now play Stephanie Fortney and Courtney Diebold of Kalamazoo Valley Community College (Mich.) at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

In No. 3 doubles, JCJC’s Jillian McNeese and Rebecca Rogers fell to Sarah Gaddy and Lindsay Farmer of Grand Rapids Community College, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. McNeese and Rogers will play Whitney Dancaster and Yury Pieczynski of Marion Military Institue (Ala.)

In singles’ consolation action, Whaley defeated Kristina McWethy of Sauk Valley Community College (Ill.), 8-4, in No. 2 singles. Whaley takes on Jane Bohlman of Snead State Community College (Ala.), at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

In No. 3 singles consolation play, Benson was defeated by Kesha McConaha-Schultz of Kalamazoo Valley, 8-2.
In No. 5 singles, JCJC’s Tiffany Hudson faces Vanessa McCall of St. Petersburg College (Florida), at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
