ELLISVILLE – One of Chris Robinson’s first acts as the newly named softball coach at Jones County Junior College was to coordinate the school’s annual summer camp.

Several youngsters, ages 7-12, from the area were at Lady Bobcat Field on June 1-3 to learn some of the basics of the game.

“We held a fundamental skills camp,” said Robinson, who was promoted to head coach on May 28. “We just taught some of the basic pitching, hitting and fielding skills, along with infield and outfield play. We also went over some baserunning techniques.

“It was a success. The kids really enjoyed it.”

The camp was also designed to introduce the youngsters to JCJC and to promote the school.

“You are trying to help them get familiar with the game and with our school,” said Robinson. “It gets our school name out there and, ultimately, starts the girls on the developmental process with softball.”

Several members of the Lady Bobcat team were on hand to assist Robinson with the camp.

“Our players enjoyed it,” he said. “We used predominantly sophomores because they were familiar with the program.” Robinson hopes to expand the camp and he is quite optimistic about that happening in the future.

“We want to have a lot more participation in the future and I think we will,” he said. “We just look forward to getting our name out in the community in a positive way. We think the future is bright for our program.”
