ELLISVILLE – Christian Ostrander said his first experience at hosting a baseball camp at Jones County Junior College was a good one.
“I thought it went well,” said the first-year head coach of the baseball Bobcats. “The main purpose was to get the kids out there at an early age and have some fun.
“By having them here at such an age, hopefully, they will come back every year and just be really familiar with our program by the time they reach high school.”
The camp, which was for youngsters ages 5-12, was held June 1-2 and June 4-5 at Bobcat Field and around 60 players participated. The camp was an all-skills camp and the youngsters were able to go through quite a few drills.
“We stressed fundamentals and skills,” said Ostrander. “We had six stations set up and they went around to each station to learn. We did that during the early part of each day and for the last hour or so, we were able to break it down and play some games.”
Ostrander, along with assistant coaches Reggie Richardson and Dusty Holifield, and several Bobcat players and incoming freshmen, were the camp instructors.
“It was a good first camp for us,” said Ostrander. “We can take this and grow it into something even bigger.”
Baseball, softball, cheerleading and football camps were held during the first week of June at JCJC. Girls and boys’ basketball camps are scheduled for later this month, with soccer and swimming camps set for July.
