CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. – Mitchell Smith fired a Jones County Junior College tournament-best 75 here Friday in the final round to pace the Bobcat golf team in the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship at Chautauqua Golf Club.
Smith’s 3-over par round gave him a four-day total of 320 to lead the Bobcat golf team. The Simpson Academy freshman finished 60th in the nation.
West Jones sophomore Nick Keyes had an 84 on Friday to give him a 330, while Sumrall sophomore Ben Whitehead had a 92, giving him a 348. Clarkdale freshman Clark Boatner had a 92 to finish at 355, while South Jones sophomore Rocky Purvis posted a 91 to finish at 368.
As a team, Jones shot a final round 335 to finish in 13th place at 1349.
Monroe Community College (N.Y.) posted a final round 298 to finish at 1173 and claim the team title. They easily outdistanced Burlington Community College (N.J.) and Rochester Community and Technical (Minn.) by 30 shots. Both of those teams finished at 1203.
Monroe’s Chris Malec shot a final round 72 to finish at 281, 7-under par, and claim medalist honors. That was five shots ahead of three golfers – Christopher Ferraro of State University of New York-Ulster Community College (SUNYUlst), Dave Sanders of Burlington and Sebastian Sarmiento of Montgomery College-Rockville (Md.). Ferraro had Friday’s best round with a 4-under 68, while Sanders shot a 75 and Sarmiento had a 71.
The JCJC golf team is scheduled to return home Saturday.
