ELLISVILLE – A pair of Jones County Junior College baseball standouts will continue their careers in the senior college ranks.
Bobcat standout pitcher/third baseman Tyler McMullen has signed with William Carey University, while outfielder/designated hitter Charlie Hillman is headed to Henderson State (Ark.).
McMullen posted an 8-3 mark on the mound with a 3.09 ERA. He pitched 84 1/3 innings, allowed 80 hits and recorded 81 strikeouts. He made 15 appearances on the mound with 13 starts and six complete games. He also had a save.
The Southeast Lauderdale High School product was named the NJCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 18 after tossing a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory at Pearl River. On March 7 vs. Kishwaukee Community College (Ill.) in the Hinds Tournament at Vicksburg, he threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 JCJC win.
At the plate, McMullen posted a .383 batting average (second best on the team) with a team-leading ten home runs. He led the team in on-base percentage (.511) and number of times being hit by a pitch (14), was tied for the top spot in walks (24), was second in RBIs (41) and third in base hits.
McMullen will join Bobcat teammate Dustin Gilmore at William Carey.
Hillman had a .380 batting average, which ranked third on the team. He had four home runs, eight doubles, two triples and 25 RBIs. He had a .443 on-base percentage, which was also third on the team.
The Perry Central High School graduate also played errorless baseball in the field.
McMullen and Hillman helped the Bobcats to a school-record 36 victories, a third place South Division finish and its first appearance in the MACJC Tournament since 2002.
