CURRICULUM

A student must apply to the program and be selected in order to register for Nursing Courses. The  ADN academic courses (*) which may be taken prior to admission to the nursing program are listed below.  Completion of these courses does not guarantee admission to the program, but enhances your  competiveness as an applicant.  See the course descriptions in the JCJC catalogue  for pre-requisites and sequence of courses. Nursing 1119, 1129, 2129, & 2139 are taught in the Fall and Spring semesters.Nursing 2113 is taught in one 5 week summer session. The program is two years in length from the point of entry into NUR 1119.

*Note: Nursing 2113 Mental Health Nursing  is taught in one four week summer session after completion of Nursing 1129 or 2129.

Nursing 1119, Adult  Nur I is the beginning course of the program. The course includes  basic fundamental knowledge and skills such as vital signs, bedmaking, bathing, physical assessment, dressing changes & medications. The study of the body systems is begun after midterm and includes the cardiovascular, & musculoskeletal  systems. Nursing process, communication, stress-adaptation, an individual as a biopsychyosocial being, growth & development, health-illness & the associate degree nurse roles are all philosophical concepts that are introduced and carried thoughout the program.

Nursing 1129, Adult Nur II is the continuation of the study of the body systems and the concepts previously introduced. Respiratory, Endocrine, Genitourinary, Gastrointestinal, Integumentary & Sensorineural are the body systems studied in this course. Skills consist of:  trachobronchial suctioning & cleaning, accuchecks & insulin administration, catetherizations, nasogastic tube insertion & tube feedings & medications.

Nursing 2113, Mental Health Nurisng is the study of mental health focusing on the adaptation and maladaptation of  the individual within  society. Therapeutic communication is emphasized as a vital part of nursing intervention within the nursing process. Some of the content under study includes mental health vs. mental illness, schizophrenia, mood disorders, substance abuse, violence, anger/agression and group process.

Nursing 2129, Maternal-Child Nursing  is the study of the woman within the childbearing cycle, the neonate and the child. The philosophical concepts are applied to the woman, neonate and the child as they appear on the health-illness continuum. Skills include newborn assessment, breastfeeding, diapering & cord care, sitz bath & heat lamp, suctioning the newborn, and medicating children.Rotations to promote the students' learning include the MS State Department of Health Postpartum home visits, Physicians' office to observe Antepartum care and Pediatric patients. Students in Nursing IV conduct teaching projects for Labor & Delivery staff and for child care facilities.

Nursing 2139, Complex Nursing is the culminating course that synthesizes all of the previous knowledge and skills. The study relates to multi-system stressors such as burns, congestive heart failure, cancer, AIDS  & chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  The skills of intravenous therapy, IV medications, central venous line care, and venipuncture specimen collection are taught. During the second half of the course, the students have an opportunity to experience 12 hour clinical shifts along with more responsibility in management of care. Rotations to enhance the students' learning include critical care, surgery, ER, dialysis unit, cancer therapy, cardiac catheterizartion lab, and home health.
