ADVANCED PLACEMENT FOR LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSING
Application For LPN TO RN ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Jones County Junior College Associate Degree Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), 61 Broadway, New York, N.Y., 10006, (1-800-669-1656 ext.153) and the Mississippi State Institutions of Higher Learning, Board of Trustees (IHL).
The program of study qualifies the graduate to be eligible for the National Council Examination for Registered Nurses
(NCLEX-RN®).
Graduates are prepared to render competent patient-centered nursing care in a variety of health care settings. The Associate in Arts Degree with a major in Nursing requires courses in biological sciences and social sciences, the humanities, as well as in nursing. *The Mississippi Board of Nursing may, at its discretion, deny an application for licensure of any person who has been convicted of a criminal offense under any provision of Title 97 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, as now amended, or any provision of this chapter.
**Persuant to Mississippi statue 43-11-13 health care workers must have a criminal background check. If you have any felonies or disqualifying events, your participation in clinical will be prohibited.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Jones County Junior College Associate Degree Nursing Program offers an advanced placement process for Licensed Practice Nurses. This challenge process allows an LPN to continue to be employed or to continue in academic course work while pursuing the challenge of NUR 1119 & NUR 1129. The number of students admitted for Advanced Placement is limited based on the enrollment of generic students.
The applicant needs to consider that this challenge process was developed for the independent, self-directed learner.
In order to be qualified, applicants must meet the following admission criteria and be a first time entry for the Associate Degree Nursing Program and:
- Be admitted to Jones County Junior College.
- Present evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or satisfactory achievement on the General Educational Development Test (GED).
- Have a composite score of 18, or equivalent on the ACT.
- Have a complete application for admission to the Advanced Placement Option of the AD Nursing Program on file.
- Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on any previous college work.
- Hold a current unencumbered license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Mississippi.
- Have one year of clinical work experience within the last four years.
- Applications will be available from the A.D.N. office or on the A.D.N. website during the application period each spring and fall semester.
Application deadlines are as follows:
- March 1 for entry into the fall class.
- Oct. 1 for entry into the spring class.
Applications are evaluated on a competitive basis.
- After acceptance into the AD Nursing Program for advanced placement, the following is required:
- Physical examination.
- Two step tuberculosis skin test or follow-up by the State Board of Health.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) current certification.
- Certificate of compliance for immunization.
- Hepatitis B immunizations or signed declination.
- Clear criminal background check.
- Completion of an orientation session.
NOTE: Dates, forms and instructions for item 9 will be given to the students selected for the Advanced Placement.

Nursing 1119 Challenge
At the time of challenging Nursing 1119 the student must have completed or be currently enrolled in BIO 2514 and FCS 1253. It is recommended that the challenge student be enrolled in PSY 1513 and ENG 1123.
The student should prepare for the challenge exam by obtaining the course syllabus and all handouts for the course at the beginning of the semester. These materials will be given to the student at the orientation session along with the ADN student handbook.
The challenge exam will consist of a comprehensive mid-term and final exam based on the daily objectives for Nursing 1119 as identified in course syllabus. Test items are developed from the textbooks which are listed on the course syllabus. The challenge exam will be given during mid-term and final exam week of the semester. An average score of seventy five percent or above must be achieved. Each student may write the challenge exam one time. Attending class is optional for the Advanced Placement student and the lab may be scheduled for practice time.
The clinical skills return demonstration will consist of satisfactory performance of specific skills according to the criteria as given in the Associate Degree Nursing Handbook. Scheduling of the return demonstration will be announced each semester.
These skills include:
- Handwashing
- Changing an occupied bed
- Vital signs
- Sterile gloving
- Sterile dressing change
- Administration of oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular meds
The Math Proficiency Test includes problems of calculating drug dosages and I.V. drop rates. Practice problems are available to the student and may be used with math textbook to prepare for the test. The Math Proficiency Test may be taken only one time and a score of eighty percent or above must be achieved. The date for the Math Proficiency Test will be announced each semester.
Upon successfully completing the challenge exam, the math proficiency test and the clinical skills demonstration the student may choose to enroll in Nursing 1129 as space is available or challenge Nursing 1129.
Nursing 1129 Challenge
At the time of challenging Nursing 1129 the student must have completed or be currently enrolled in BIO 2524 and EPY 2533. It is recommended that the challenge student be enrolled in ENG 1123 and MAT 1313. The student should prepare for the challenge exam by obtaining the course syllabus and all handouts for the course at the beginning of the semester. These materials are available in the Associate Degree Nursing Department and may be obtained following successful completion of NUR 1119 challenge.
The challenge exam will consist of a comprehensive mid-term and final exam based on the daily objectives for Nursing 1129 as identified in the course syllabus. Test items are developed from the textbooks which are listed on the course syllabus. The challenge exam will be given during mid-term and final exam week of the semester. An average score of seventy-five percent or above must be achieved. Each student may write the challenge exam one time.
The clinical skills return demonstration will consist of satisfactory performance of specific skills according to the critical criteria as given in the Associate Degree Nursing Handbook. Scheduling of the return demonstration will be announced each semester. These skills include:
- Intradermal injections
- Inserting a retention catheter
- Instilling eye drops
- Accuchecks
- Tracheostomy suctioning/ cleaning
- Nasogastric, intubation, tube feedings, and tube meds
- Insulin injections
The student must also complete a TB workshop during the challenge. Upon successfully completing the challenge exam, the clinical skills demonstration, and having met the prerequisites: of NUR1119 and NUR 1129 challenge courses, the student is eligible to enroll in the next nursing course in progression (NUR 2113 or NUR 2129) as space is available.
Fees for the Advanced Placement include a $40.00 exam fee and upon successful completion of the challenge process, the college fee per credit hour for NUR 1119/NUR 1129 is to be paid at the end of each respective semester for the work to be transcribed. Refer to the current Catalog College for college fees and expenses. Advanced Placement students are not eligible for financial aid during the first two semesters of the challenge process.
