The purpose of the eight-week Truck Driving program is to prepare individuals for employment in the commercial truck driving field as an over-the-road driver. The program is a combination of classroom, hands-on equipment training, and actual road driving.
Students may choose an eight week training option or a one semester training option. Under the semester training, the student may choose one the Commercial Truck Driving Internship Training, or the Commercial Truck Driving Supervised Work Experience option. Both of these are an extra eight week option. The student will receive an eight week class and hands on training first, and then the other eight week Internship, or Work Experience Training.
Instruction includes safety, Department of Transportation rules and regulations, operating diesel powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records, and keeping necessary records. Also included are instructions in proper shifting, log books, preparing paperwork, map reading, handling cargo, and various driving conditions.
