Winter Meeting - December 12, 1997

President Kyle Hill called the meeting to order. Gary Sheppeard announced that rooms for All-State Band, Jan. 28-31 at MSU, should be reserved before Jan. 19. The Holiday Inn (601)323-6161 is holding 45 rooms w/ 2 dbl. beds. $56 per room. Requests for a room to store luggage and/or change after the concert should be made when room reservations are made.
 
Northwest will take care of percussion equipment, Co-Lin certificates, and Jones programs.
 
Judging assignments will be the same as last year. Judges should bring suitable sightreading materials. Winds will tryout in the Union and percussion will tryout on stage
 
The following material, to be designated Group A, will be used for the tryout prepared piece:

Group B tryout sheets and others will be selected next year and then alternated.
 
The students for All-State Band will be selected Thursday, Jan. 15th, 3:00 p.m. by teleconference. (1st come, 1st serve on the order)
Directors should fax student lists to Kyle Hill (Fax 795-1135) by noon Thursday, the 15th.
 
MSU will host master classes on all instruments during the week-end. Community college directors and students are invited to attend. Community college directors are asked to bring their instruments for the Thursday night director's reading band. MSU wants to host an All-State Jazz Band with high school and community college players. Call MSU for audition information.
 
Several proposals were made concerning the length of halftime performances. Coaches have suggested a 12 minute limit for each band, total time, on and off, with a penalty for the home team if there is a violation. It was agreed that clocks should be consistent throughout the state.
 
Naz Rhodes made the motion that 12 minutes be allowed for each band, total on and off, with a visable clock set at 26 minutes by the referee after the field is cleared. Gary Sheppeard seconded the motion. Motion passed. It was strongly urged that director's try to limit the length of music (1st to last note) to 9 minutes when two bands are present.
 
David Dueitt opened discussion on bands performing out of district. It was agreed that in many cases groups are welcome to perform out of district as long as the proper procedure as to permission is followed. Tracy Irby stressed the importance of communication between band directors. Steve Barnett made a motion that in addition to following proper procedure with our administrations, band directors should call each other first regarding possible out of district performances. Archie Rawls seconded the motion. Motion passed.
 
Stanley Stewart will work on a compilation of past minutes,by-laws, recordings, etc. of our Association.
 
Sammy Bahr will remain on the committee for reviewing changes for our All-State Band.
