FINE ARTS COURSES

Jones offers a wide range of classes in music for Music Majors as well as Non-Majors; from private instruction and performing groups, to comprehensive surveys in music theory, music history and music education.

Please review the summaries below for an overview of the many opportunities in music offered to Jones students:

PERFORMING GROUPS (MUO prefix classes)

Marching and Concert Band, Concert Choir, Brass Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Band, Vocal Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble, Theatre Production and Jones Onstage Show Choir.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION (MUA prefix classes)

Jones offers private instruction in Brass, Guitar, Organ, Piano, Percussion, Voice and Woodwinds.

MUSIC CLASSES (MUS prefix classes)

Music Appreciation (MUS 1113) - Listening course designed to give the student, through aural perception, understanding and appreciation of music as a moving force in Western Culture. This course is designed for non-music majors and does not require previous knowledge of music reading or performance skills. Students receive three semester hours credit and this course satisfies the Fine Arts requirement toward graduation.

Music Fundamentals (MUS 1133) - Provides the student with basic knowledge of notation, scales, keys, rhythm, intervals, triads, and their inversions. This course is intended for students who desire more in-depth knowledge of music fundamentals and is open to non-music majors as well as music majors. Students receive three semester hours credit. This course counts as an elective but does not count toward a music degree.

Music Theory and Theory Lab (MUS 1213/1211, 1223/1221, 2213/2211, 2223/2221) - Four-semester sequential study of functional harmony through analysis and part writing, sight-singing, and ear training. Required of all Music Majors, Non-majors may take with the permission of instructor.

Music Survey (MUS 1123) - Advanced listening course, designed to acquaint the music major with a broad overview of musical style and repertoire from antiquity to the present. Required of all music majors. Three semester hours credit.

Music for Elementary Teachers (MUS 2513) - Designed for the needs of the elementary education student. Essentials of public school music; study of the fundamentals of music. Reading music notation and terminiology. Three semester hours credit.

Recital Class (MUS 1911, 1921, 2911, 2921) - Attendance at a prescribed minimum number of departmentally approved musical performances per semester also required. Required of all Music Majors.
