Practical Nurses
The outlook is good for students who wish to break into the field of practical nursing. The need for Practical nurses has kept up with the number of graduates from practical nursing program. This is in part because of increasing need to care for more older adults as our population continues to to age.
The practical Nursing program at Jones County Junior College offers a 12 month course of studies that quickly puts students into the health care field. After successfully completing the program, students are eligible to apply to take the State exam that allows the designation Licensed Practical Nurse ( LPN).
Success
The Practical Nursing Program At JCJC leads to a Vocational Certificate in Practical Nursing. The program teaches Direct care for patients through classroom and laboratory work as well as on-site training in hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care settings. JCJC is committed to meeting student and communities' needs by providing quality health care professionals.
What Do LPN's Do ?
Under the direction of physicians and registered nurses, licensed practical nurses provide basic bedside care. They take temperatures, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, apply dressings, provide skilled bedside care, administer medications and much more. In nursing homes, the LPN may be involved in evaluating resident needs and developing care programs, as well as supervising certified nurse assistants.
Where do they work?
Employment opportunities include: hospitals, doctors' offices, temporary agencies, home health care services and government agencies. LPN's may work weekend, night shift, or holiday schedules.
Skills
LPN's should have a caring, sympathetic nature. They should be emotionally stable, team players, able to follow orders and work well under close supervision. some specific abilities required include:

ACCREDITATION AND LICENSURE
The JCJC Practical Nursing program is accredited by the Mississippi State Board of Education. In addition, advisory committees made up of local health professionals help ensure that students receive the best training possible and that the program keeps pace with current employment demands. JCJC students completing the Practical Nursing program have a proven track record for the State licensure exam! The JCJC percentage passing rate generally exceeds the Mississippi and National passing rates.
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
Admission to the Practical Nursing program is selective. the following criteria must be met in order to be accepted into the Jones County Junior College Practical Nursing program:
- Application and acceptance to JCJC - Apply Now
- High School Diploma and transcript or GED Certificate
- Official college transcript mailed directly to JCJC by any previous credit granting institution - Transcript Request
- ACT test scores REQUIRED minimum score of 16 with a minimum of 14 on Reading, Math, and English
- Complete application packet, and three personal references for Practical Nursing Program - LPN Admission Packet.
- NET - Nursing Entrance Test given on JCJC campus. A study guide is available in the JCJC Bookstore or may be ordered by calling 1-800-292-2273.
- An FBI background check may be done at the time at the time of program admission.
DEADLINES DATES
All admission criteria must be complete to be considered for selection. The deadline dates are:
- 2nd Friday in October for Spring classes which begin in January.
- 2nd Friday in May for Fall classes which begin in August.
