BIOLOGY COURSES

BIO 1134 - General Biology I

This course is designed to present the basic biological principles and concepts of life. It includes the study of the chemical basis of life; cell structure, function, and reproduction; metabolism and energy exchanges; genetics; and a taxonomical survey of the kingdoms of life. Three hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 1144 – General Biology II

As a continuation of BIO 1134, this course covers animal anatomy and physiology with emphasis on human organ systems. Studies of nutrition, digestion, circulation, respiration, immunity, homeostasis, nervous and chemical control, and reproduction will be presented. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 1314 – Botany

A study of the representative groups of the plant kingdom, their anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, and economic importance. This course is designed to meet the needs of agriculture, forestry, education, and horticulture. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 1414 – Zoology

A study of the life processes, the main principles of zoology, and the major animal phyla. This course is designed for students majoring in agriculture, forestry, education, mathematics and science, and medically related majors. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 2414 – Zoology I

A study of cell structure and function followed by a detailed study of the invertebrate phyla with emphasis on their anatomy and physiology. This course is designed for majors in pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-nursing, physical therapy, and pre-veterinary majors. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 2424 – Zoology II

A continuation of BIO 2414 with emphasis on the vertebrate classes, their major systems and genetics. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 2514 – Anatomy and Physiology I

Prerequisite: BIO 1134, 1144, or 1414, or CHE 1114, or 1214, or permission of instructor. The study of the histology, structure, and functions of the systems of the human body. Laboratory consists of microscopic study of cells and tissues; dissection; and physiological and anatomical study of the systems. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 2524 – Anatomy and Physiology II

Prerequisite: BIO 2514. The continuation of BIO 2514. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.

BIO 2924 – Microbiology

Prerequisite: BIO 1134, or 2414, or 1314, or 1414, or CHE 1114, or 1214, or permission of instructor. A general course in bacteriology will be presented to include morphology; taxonomy; ecology; and the physiology of bacteria and allied micro-organisms. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Four semester hours credit.
