ABE Experiences Increase
Despite Statewide declines, Jones finds Growth in students
Although statewide Adult Basic Education enrollment has been on the decline, Jones has experienced a significant increase, and ABE Director Jennifer Griffith credits that to the college’s instructors.
“We have phenomenal instructors,” she said. “We have a great team. They’re generally concerned about the welfare of our students, and our greatest advertising is word of mouth from success stories of our students.”
As of April 2008, the ABE program served 1,200 for the year, which is over 80 additional students from the previous year. ABE includes help in Adult Basic Education courses, GED preparation, ACT preparation, college prep and career counseling. The number of GED graduates continues to increase each year as well. Last year, there were 150 graduates, and this year, over 200 students are eligible to participate in the GED graduation ceremonies.
The ABE program has steadily increased its methods of reaching students: ABE classes are offered in every county in the college’s district. “We’re enrolling constantly. Our enrollment is steadily growing, and I’m ecstatic,” said Griffith.
