Sandra Sumrall

Sandra Sumrall became the Coach of the Lady Bobcat Basketball Team in 2000. Under the leadership of Coach Sumrall the Lady Bobcats have compiled a record of 107-73 winning the State Championship in 2001-2002, only the second time in school history, and advanced to the Region 23 tournament. Prior to coaching at Jones, Sumrall was the junior high and assistant high school girl’s basketball coach at West Jones High School from 1978-1981 and took on the job as head basketball coach at West Jones from 1982-1999

Coach Sumrall graduated from Northeast Jones High School where she played varsity basketball for 4 years. Upon graduation from high school, Coach Sumrall attended the University of MS where she received scholarships for the Lady Rebel volleyball team and the Lady Rebel basketball team Coach Sumrall received her B.S. degree in Physical Education at the University of MS, she received her Masters degree from William Carey College.

During her coaching career at West Jones, Coach Sumrall compiled a record of 364 wins and 136 losses. Her team won 5 Southern Athletic Conference Championships, 6 District Championships, 1 South State Championship, and a State Championship. Her teams made 5 state tournament appearances. She was named Southern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year 3 years and Laurel-Jones County All-Area Coach of the Year. Coach Sumrall was selected as a coach of the South High School All-Star basketball team, Administrative Assistant Coach in 1997 and Administrative coach in 1998 for the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star basketball team. She coached two Mississippi Gatorade Players of the year, an SEC player of the year, a Kodak All-American, player on the Olympic team at Barcelona, player in the WNBA and the Portland Blazers in the WNBA.

Coach Sumrall is married to Rick Sumrall of Laurel and they have two daughters, Brittany and Chelsey.turn

Cara Hyatt Bio

Hyatt returns to JCJC after two years as the Northeast Jones High School Varsity Basketball Coach. At Northeast Jones, her record was 53-18 with a 4A state semi-final tournament trip in 2005-06 to be beaten by the eventual state champs.  The Lady Tigers had a second round South State appearance in 2006-07.

Prior to the Northeast Jones coaching experience, the Heidelberg native and Laurel resident assumed the role as the assistant basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Mississippi College. 

Hyatt was also an outstanding basketball player before her coaching days.  She was an all-state high school basketball player at Heidelberg Academy, an all-star player at JCJC under Coach Sandra Sumrall, and she finished her basketball playing career while at Mississippi College. 

“Jones has always felt like home...I am looking forward to many great and rewarding years here!” said Hyatt.

Coach Sumrall is thrilled to have one of her alumna back on her team.  “Cara has coached and worked  part-time with me in the past so I know that she has great work ethics, character and a great enthusiasm for the game of basketball. Her experience as a successful head coach in high school and her recruiting experience as a college recruiter will make her a valuable asset to our program and to Jones Junior College,” said Sumrall.

Hyatt completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Mississippi College in 2002 and her associate degree from Jones in 2000.  Hyatt earned her master’s degree in business management from Colorado Technical University in 2006 where she graduated magna cum laud.  She has put her business skills to work as owner of a gift boutique in Laurel called the Alee Cat.  Hyatt has two daughters, Alee, 3 and Annah Cate, 2.To Home Page
