Adult Basic Education

The Adult Education Department of JCJC provides opportunities for individuals to improve basic skills, obtain a high school equivalency, and proceed to college or the workforce. There are multiple paths to take to earn the Mississippi High School Equivalency Diploma.


ABE Offers

Some restrictions apply. Examinees must meet certain eligibility requirements. Additional services are not included in price. Call the Adult Basic Education Office at 601-477-4164 for more information.

ABE/HSE Class

ABE/HSE Class Individuals may enroll in free ABE/HSE classes located in the JCJC Advanced Technology Building. Classes are offered in the morning, afternoon and evenings. All candidates are required to take a diagnostic test to determine their basic skills knowledge. For more information about class enrollment and registration dates call 601-477-4164.

Literacy Class

Do you know someone who wants/needs to learn to read? Adults can come to JCJC to join our literacy program. We offer small group learning environments with students on the same educational skill level. Upon availability we place students with a volunteer tutor and they work one-on-one to improve their reading skills. Cost: Free.

English Second Language

English as a Second Language (ESL) at JCJC is taught to prepare immigrants to participate fully in our English speaking community and prepare them for citizenship. JCJC provides ESL instruction at no charge (free) for area residents. For more information, call 601-477-4164.

Requirements to Enroll

  • Must know your Social Security Number
  • Must have a State-Issued Picture ID
  • Must be at least 16 Years Old
  • Students under 18 must submit official withdrawal letter from last High School attended and need a parent/guardian to attend the enrollment process to give consent

The High School Equivalency program (formerly GED®) is composed of courses designed to prepare students to successfully complete the high school equivalency examinations, including the 2014 GED® www.gedtestingservice.com; High School Equivalency Test www.ets.hiset.org, and Test of Adult Secondary Completion www.tasctest.com.

This program is designed to assist adults who do not have a high school diploma. Various levels of language arts, math, employability, and basic skills courses are offered to help students gain the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for a high school equivalency exam and beyond.
