2024 Honor Alumni

At our 2024 Homecoming celebration “The Golden Era”, Jones College proudly recognized ten distinguished alumni for their remarkable achievements across various fields and their steadfast commitment to community service. These alumni exemplify the values of Jones College, having excelled in their careers while contributing meaningfully to the communities they serve. From groundbreaking work in agriculture, medicine, and business to advocacy for education and youth programs, each honoree reflects the spirit of excellence and dedication that define our legacy. Join us in celebrating these inspiring individuals whose accomplishments and contributions continue to enrich lives and shape the future.

 

Rising Star: Hans Van Houten

Hans Van Houten, an accomplished aircraft mechanic from Moselle, was honored as a Rising Star during Jones College’s Homecoming 2024 celebrations. Currently working with the 172nd Airlift Wing of the Mississippi Air National Guard, Hans developed his mechanical skills early in life, influenced by hands-on experience with cars, motorcycles, and more. His journey through Jones College’s automotive programs propelled him toward a successful career, leading him to the aviation field and inspiring his commitment to service and exploration.

Rising Star: Sawyer M. Taylor

Sawyer Taylor of Laurel, another Rising Star recipient, began his academic journey at Jones College on an athletic scholarship, playing golf and actively recruiting as part of the Bobcat Brigade. Following his time at Jones, he completed a degree in Agri-Business at Mississippi State University and now serves as Market President at Community Bank in Jones County. Taylor’s leadership and dedication have distinguished him in his field, marking him as a notable young alumnus.

Achievement and Excellence: Dr. John Reynolds Clark, PT, DPT, SCS

Dr. John Reynolds Clark, a distinguished alumnus of Jones College, was honored with the Achievement & Excellence Award for his notable contributions to sports medicine. As the Director of Sports Medicine and Sports Rehabilitation at Wayne General Hospital in Waynesboro, Dr. Clark has earned recognition through his work with professional athletes and local sports teams. With board certification as a specialist in sports physical therapy, he has treated athletes from prominent organizations, including NFL and MLB teams, enhancing his impact on the field and in his community.

Achievement and Excellence: Dr. Benjamin P. Stevens, MD

Dr. Benjamin P. Stevens, a former Jones College quarterback, also received the Achievement & Excellence Award. Now an accomplished physician specializing in otolaryngology, Dr. Stevens practices alongside his father at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgical Clinic in Laurel. His academic journey, marked by a top-ten finish in his medical school class and membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, reflects his dedication to both his profession and his roots, making him a valued member of the medical community and an outstanding role model for Jones College alumni.

Distinguished Service Award: Michael and Katye Howard

Michael and Katye Howard were awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Jones College, celebrating their profound commitment to community service and leadership. Michael, CEO of Howard Industries, has guided the company’s growth and innovation for over three decades, while Katye, a Jones College alumna, has been a dedicated advocate for numerous educational and charitable initiatives. The Howards are known for their philanthropic efforts across the region, including substantial support for Jones College programs and local organizations, highlighting their lasting impact on both the college and the community.

Legacy Award: Dr. Larry D. Guthrie

Dr. Larry D. Guthrie, an alumnus celebrated with the prestigious Legacy Award, has dedicated his life to advancing the dairy industry through extensive research and education. Starting his journey at Jones College on a football scholarship, Dr. Guthrie pursued further studies at McNeese State, Auburn University, and LSU, ultimately pioneering safe feeding practices for dairy cows. His work, published in leading journals, influenced modern dairy production standards and earned him numerous accolades, including Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia. His legacy extends beyond academia, with lifelong contributions to youth agriculture programs, solidifying his impact on both the dairy industry and agricultural education.

Outstanding Alumni of the Year: Dr. Jeffrey E. Carter, MD

Dr. Jeffrey E. Carter, a distinguished Jones College alumnus, was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for his groundbreaking work in burn care. As the Associate Medical Director of the Burn Center at University Medical Center in New Orleans, Dr. Carter has developed innovative treatment methods for third-degree burns, including pioneering spray-on medicines. His expertise extends globally, as he frequently consults and certifies burn units worldwide. Dr. Carter’s dedication to advancing medical education and patient outcomes has earned him numerous teaching and research accolades, including leadership roles within the American Burn Association.

Outstanding Alumni of the Year: Erin and Ben Napier

Ben and Erin Napier, celebrated Jones College alumni, were honored as Outstanding Alumni of the Year for their impact on community revitalization and national prominence through their HGTV series, Home Town. The couple has transformed their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, with successful ventures such as the Laurel Mercantile Company and Scotsman Co., alongside various community projects. They recently launched the OSPREY initiative, advocating for delayed social media use among children. Known for their passion for community, craftsmanship, and family, the Napiers credit Jones College as the foundation of their journey, which has brought them widespread recognition and success.
